Your Workshop Leaders:
Nicole Pemberton
Nicole has knowledge in many dance styles African, Contemporary, Caribbean, Jazz and Hip Hop. She has been flexing her teaching skills in studios and schools all over Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver. She educates, choreographs and mentors with many organizations. At SoundKreations she is the Team lead and head of Professional Development.
Nicole has trained and performed with various respected artists and choreographers in Canada and across the globe. Her background is in performance, expressive arts, and education in dance.
Her formal education included obtaining a diploma and BA of Arts specializing in dance, choreography and performance. Nicole has presented her own choreography and spoken word works on stage.
Nicole is a dance artist, mentor, choreographer, writer, speaker, entrepreneur and educator who has performed professionally nationally in Canada. She has performed Internationally in places such as New York and Trinidad and Tobago. Her lineage comes from the islands of Antigua/Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the countries of England and Canada. She has taught and facilitated movement experiences over 100,000 + kids and adults and counting. Currently she is also the new Artistic Director Footprints Dance projects, an organization that provides dance and film programming to Youth-At-Risk.
Always expanding her skills and interests Nicole has studied in Health and embodiment coaching, Spirituality, Divine feminine and Goddess arts, Intuitive channeling, somatic movement, energy modalities (Reiki, Crystal therapy). Nicole’s studies have aligned her to train with leaders like Allie McFee, Usha Anandi and Sofiah Thom. Combining all these modalities Nicole adds to her list of experience being a Temple Body Artist, Reiki/Crystal/Womb Wisdom practitioner, Embodiment coach, and has created her own women empowerment business The Goddess Moves, a sacred space for women to awaken, align, and embody in full expression to the Goddess within.
For over 25 years Nicole has dedicated her life to the arts, wellness, and empowerment. Dance is more than just steps for her. It is a powerful healing embodiment resource that we all have access to. It is medicine!
Sonya Zimmer
Sonya Zimmer is SoundKreations’ Operations Manager, Curriculum Consultant, Licensed Alberta Teacher, Dance and Physical Education Advocate! Sonya took a deep dive into sharing the passion for physical literacy by completing her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in special and physical education. Prior to joining the SoundKreations team, she gained 20 years experience teaching in K-6 classrooms as a classroom and physical education specialist with Rockyview Schools near Calgary, Alberta.
Josh McKinnon
At age 11, Josh McKinnon fell in love with hip hop. From the music, to the dance styles, to the culture itself, hip hop is where he finds himself most at home. Born in Calgary, Josh found his place when he took his first dance class. From there Josh has developed his own original movement by studying and combining foundations from styles such as: Popping, Breaking, House, Animation, and Lite Feet. Josh has trained under hip hop pioneers such as: The Electric Boogaloos, Sho-Tyme, Mr. YouTube, Chrybaby Cozie, Monsta Pop, and many others. Some of Josh’s performance highlights include: Beakernight 2018, Transcend Vancouver 2018 (Illustrative Society), Mantra Tour Edmonton, and Army of Sass Gatsby. Josh was assistant choreographer for Tribulations, a dance story directed and choreographed by Hannah Joelle. Most recently, he was associate choreographer for Cappuccino Theatre’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, directed by Tory Doctor. Josh is consistently expanding his experiences and pushing his artistic boundaries. In addition, Josh also facilitates mental health gatherings for artists. Through his love for his art, and his practises in mental health, Josh’s goal is to guide the next generation and help them unlock their true potential.
Ajay Musodi
Ajay is a dance artist and educator with 10+ years of experience as a dancer, choreographer and teacher. He leads residencies in English as well as French allowing students to learn and explore dance styles in a bilingual or fully francophone environment. He has trained in various styles such as: Hip Hop, Ndombolo, Afro-House and creative movement. He has gained this knowledge from world renowned teachers in New York, Mexico, France, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. His recent credits: receiving 1st Place at World Of Dance Las Vegas 2019, 1st Place Monsters Santa Clara 2019, Radix Oregon 2018 Top Scoring Jr Hip Hop Choreographer and 1st Place AE Vancouver 2018. Aside from competitive choreography Ajay dedicates his time teaching in-school Hip Hop residency programs to schools Across Canada. He does so with the sole purpose of spreading the infectious Culture of Hip Hop dance which teaches the youth the importance of respect, self love and appreciation for our differences.
Matt Leung
Matt Leung is a Professional Child who has spent over 10 years working with children and youth in the recreation and education sectors. Matt is the founder of Be Positive Educators, the Regional Operator for PL3Y Education Calgary, and has facilitated high-impact trainings and workshops for educators and professionals across Canada and the United States. He is an expert at instigating play for all ages and has been featured by various media networks including Global News and Fox Carolina.
